Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) is about 15 km from the city centre. The NS train from the station directly under the terminal reaches Amsterdam Centraal in ~17 min (~€6.20, every few minutes). April–May brings the tulips (and Keukenhof); summer is lively but busy. Spring and early autumn are mild and pretty. Winters are cold, grey and atmospheric. Pack a rain jacket whenever you go.

Mind the bikes
Amsterdam runs on bicycles — look both ways and never walk in the red bike lanes. The centre is compact and walkable; trams, metro and buses (tap a contactless card) cover the rest. Renting a bike is a joy if you're confident. For transit, a <strong>GVB day pass</strong> gives unlimited tram/bus/metro (1-day ~€9, up to 7-day ~€41); the <strong>I amsterdam City Card</strong> (24h ~€60) bundles GVB travel with most museums and a canal cruise.

For a guided overview, <strong>Tootbus</strong> and <strong>City Sightseeing</strong> run hop-on-hop-off buses (~€30, 1-day) past the Rijksmuseum, Vondelpark and the main canals — though in Amsterdam a hop-on-hop-off canal boat often makes more sense, and many tickets combine both.
