Airport → your hotel
Berlin Brandenburg (BER) is about 24 km southeast. The station sits directly under Terminal 1. The FEX airport express runs to Hauptbahnhof in ~30 min, the RE7 and RB14 to Alexanderplatz and Friedrichstraße, and the S9/S45 more slowly to the ring — all of them on the same ABC ticket (€4.70), which is one of the cheapest airport transfers in Europe. A taxi to Mitte is roughly €50–60. Buy the ticket before boarding and validate it at the platform stamper — inspectors are frequent and unsympathetic. Verified Aug 2026.

Ways to spend less
A huge amount of Berlin is free: the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag dome, the East Side Gallery, the Berlin Wall Memorial, Topography of Terror, the Holocaust Memorial, the Tiergarten and Mauerpark. Budget for museums, not for sightseeing.
Museum Island day pass €24 against €12-14 per museum — worth it from the second building. The Museum Pass Berlin (€32, 3 days) covers 30 museums across the city and wins if you are doing Museum Island plus anything else.
The AB day ticket is €9.90 and covers U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus. You need ABC (€10.70) for the airport, Potsdam and Sachsenhausen — buy ABC on those days rather than an extension.
Bus 100 and 200 run past the Reichstag, Brandenburg Gate, Unter den Linden and Alexanderplatz on an ordinary fare — the same route the hop-on-hop-off buses charge €25 for.
Sachsenhausen and Topography of Terror are free; the excellent audio guides are €6 or less.

Telekom, Vodafone and O2 sell prepaid SIMs; German law requires passport registration, which can take a few minutes in store. Aldi Talk and Lidl Connect are far cheaper for data. eSIMs avoid the paperwork. EU roaming plans cover Germany.

Best time to visit
May to September is the good stretch — long evenings, everything outdoors, and the parks full. Winter is cold, dark by 16:00 and grey, though the Christmas markets from late November are genuinely worth a trip on their own. Spring and autumn are cheap and pleasant.

Getting around
U-Bahn, S-Bahn, tram and bus are one ticketing system. An AB day ticket (€9.90) covers the city; you need ABC (€10.70) for the airport, Potsdam and Sachsenhausen. There are no barriers anywhere — you must validate your ticket in the platform stamper yourself, and plain-clothes inspectors fine €60 on the spot. The U-Bahn runs all night on Friday and Saturday.

Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Germany's applications go through VFS Global with biometrics; fee ~€90, processing about 15 working days. German slots are notoriously scarce — check for appointments the moment you have dates, and be ready to apply through another Schengen country if Germany is not your main destination.

Food to try
Currywurst, döner kebab (invented here, not in Turkey), schnitzel, Königsberger Klopse, and a Berliner Weisse with syrup in summer. Berlin is one of the easiest European cities to be vegetarian or vegan in — there are whole streets of it in Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg, and most menus mark dishes clearly.

Carry cash
Germany is far more cash-based than the rest of western Europe. Plenty of bars, bakeries, döner shops and even some restaurants take no cards at all, and 'EC-Karte' machines often reject foreign credit cards. Keep €50-100 in notes on you and do not rely on tapping.

Two things must be booked weeks ahead
The Reichstag dome needs online registration with the Bundestag, typically two to three weeks in advance with passport details for everyone. Sanssouci Palace runs timed entry capped daily. Both are free or cheap and both sell out — book them before you book anything else.
