Airport → your hotel
Brussels Airport (BRU) is about 12 km north-east at Zaventem. The train station is directly under the terminal — four an hour to Bruxelles-Nord, Central and Midi, 17 minutes to Central, around €12 one way including the airport surcharge. That is far and away the best option. The Airport Line 12/21 bus to Schuman/Luxembourg is about €7 and useful only for the European Quarter. A taxi to the centre runs €45–55. Note that Brussels South Charleroi (CRL), used by Ryanair and Wizz, is a different airport 55 km away — the shuttle to Brussels-Midi is about €22 and takes an hour. Verified Aug 2026.

Ways to spend less
The Brussels Card covers 48 museums, with 24/48/72-hour tiers and an optional transport add-on. It only pays if you are doing three or more paid museums a day — with two, buy singles.
Museums are free on the first Wednesday afternoon of the month from 13:00, including the Royal Museums of Fine Arts and Magritte.
Buy the Atomium + Mini-Europe combo at €35 rather than €41 separately if you are doing both — they are three minutes apart.
A STIB day pass is €8.40; single journeys are €2.10 contactless. The centre is small enough that most people need neither.
Eat the plat du jour at lunch — the same kitchens charge half what they do at dinner, and Belgian portions do not need a second meal.

Best time to visit
May–September is mild and long-evening'd, and the Flower Carpet fills Grand-Place in mid-August every second year. Brussels rains in every month — pack for it rather than planning around it. December is genuinely good: the Christmas market and the light show on Grand-Place are among Europe's better ones.

Getting around
STIB runs metro, tram and bus on one ticket — €2.10 contactless per journey, €8.40 for a day. But the historic centre is about a kilometre across and you will walk most of it. The upper and lower towns are separated by a real hill; the Mont des Arts steps and the Palais de Justice lift both solve it.

Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Apply through VFS Global for Belgium with biometrics; fee €90 (€45 for ages 6–12), about 15 working days, plus roughly ₹2,500 in VFS charges. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights — if Brussels is one stop of a wider Europe trip, that may not be Belgium.

Food to try
Moules-frites in season, carbonnade flamande, waterzooi, a Liège waffle from a window, and chips from a friture with andalouse sauce. Belgian chocolate is worth the money at Wittamer or Marcolini and not at the airport. Vegetarians should say so clearly — Belgian menus are meat-heavy, though every brasserie can do a decent salad or croque.

Beer is the local museum
Belgium has around 1,500 beers and each has its own glass, which is not a gimmick — the glass is part of the recipe's presentation. Trappist ales run 8–11% and are served in 33 cl for a reason. Lambic and gueuze are spontaneously fermented, sour and unlike anything else; try one even if you dislike sour beer, because you cannot get it elsewhere.

Two languages, one city
Brussels is officially bilingual French and Dutch, and street signs carry both — Bruxelles-Midi and Brussel-Zuid are the same station, which trips people up on departure boards. French dominates in practice. English is widely spoken in the centre. Opening with a 'bonjour' rather than 'hello' still buys you a warmer response.
