All 11 tips — visa, airport transfer & ways to spend less.
🛬
Airport → your hotel
O'Hare International Airport (ORD) is about 29 km from the city centre. The CTA Blue Line runs 24/7 straight from beneath the airport to downtown (the Loop) in ~45 min for $5. A taxi is roughly $50–60 including the $4 airport tax; Uber/Lyft similar (more at surge). Add your hotel on the Day-by-Day tab for an exact distance and fare. Verified Jul 2026.
🆘
Emergencies
911 — police, ambulance and fire. Free, 24/7.
📱
SIM & data
Carriers: T-Mobile, AT&T, Verizon. Prepaid SIMs everywhere; an eSIM (Airalo/Holafly) is easiest.
🌡
Best time to visit
Late spring through early fall (May–Oct) is glorious on the lakefront. Summer has festivals; fall is crisp and clear. Winters are bitterly cold and windy (Dec–Mar) — pack serious layers if you go then.
🚆
Getting around
The CTA "L" trains and buses cover the city; the Loop is very walkable and the Riverwalk links many sights. Get a Ventra card. Rideshare is easy. The Blue Line connects O'Hare to downtown cheaply. A Ventra card runs the 'L' trains and buses — unlimited passes cost ~$5 (1-day) or ~$15 (3-day) — and Divvy bikes are handy downtown; the Big Bus hop-on-hop-off is ~$50 (1-day).
🚌
Hop-on-hop-off buses
Big Bus Chicago runs open-top loops past the Magnificent Mile, Millennium Park, Navy Pier and the Museum Campus — about ~$50 for a 1-day adult ticket. Good for a lakefront overview; the 'L' and walking cover the Loop well too.
💵
Tipping & tax
Tip 18–20% at restaurants, $1–2 a drink. Chicago has high sales tax (10.25%) added at the register, and some restaurants add a small city/health surcharge.
🛂
Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a US B1/B2 visitor visa (no visa on arrival or ESTA). Apply via DS-160 and a consular interview; wait times can be long, so apply months ahead. Fee ~US$185.
🎟
Chicago CityPASS
If visiting Skydeck, Shedd and two or three museums, the Chicago CityPASS saves up to ~45% versus individual tickets. Do the math against your shortlist.
🏛
Book the architecture cruise
The Chicago Architecture Center river cruise is the single best way to understand the city and runs on fixed departures (roughly Apr–Nov). Book a specific time ahead, especially on weekends.
🍕
Food to try
Deep-dish pizza (Lou Malnati's, Pequod's), an Italian beef "wet" with giardiniera, a Chicago-style hot dog (never ketchup), and Garrett's caramel-cheese popcorn are all essential.
