Airport → your hotel
Florence Airport (FLR) is unusually close — about 5 km north-west. The T2 tram leaves from directly outside arrivals and reaches Santa Maria Novella station, at the edge of the historic centre, in roughly 20 minutes for €1.70. It runs every 5 minutes until around 00:30 and is the obvious choice. Taxis charge a fixed €22 to the centre (€24 at night and on holidays), which is fair with luggage or a group. Many long-haul routes from India actually land at Pisa (PSA) or Bologna (BLQ) instead — both are about an hour away by direct train to Santa Maria Novella, around €10 and €18 respectively. Ways to spend less
State museums are free on the first Sunday of the month — Uffizi, Accademia, Bargello, Medici Chapels, Pitti. Free also means rammed; arrive at opening or not at all.
The Uffizi drops to €16 after 16:00 and to €20 on Friday evenings. If you mainly want the Botticelli rooms, that is the same art for half the money.
Under-18s of any nationality enter Italian state museums free, and 18–25 EU citizens pay €2. Carry passports.
The €30 Brunelleschi Pass covers five Duomo sites for three days — buying the dome, tower, baptistery and museum separately costs considerably more, and there is no cheaper Duomo combination.
Florence is walkable end to end in 30 minutes. Almost nobody needs a transport pass here; put the money into the Uffizi booking fee instead.

Best time to visit
April–May and late September–October are ideal — warm, workable and the light is what the painters were looking at. July and August are hot, airless in the streets and very crowded; the Duomo climb in August is a genuine ordeal. November–February is cold and damp but the museums are empty and hotels are half price.

Getting around
Walk. The historic centre is about 2 km across, largely pedestrianised and closed to non-resident traffic — a ZTL zone with cameras that will post a fine to a rental car months later. Buses and the tram exist for the airport and Piazzale Michelangelo, at €1.70 a ride. Cobbles everywhere, so bring shoes that can take them.

Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Apply through VFS Global for Italy with biometrics; fee €90 (€45 for ages 6–12), about 15 working days, plus roughly ₹2,650 in VFS charges. Italian slots from India are among the hardest to get in summer — start 8 weeks out.

Bistecca alla fiorentina (a T-bone sold by weight, served rare — do not ask for it well done), lampredotto, ribollita, pappa al pomodoro, cantucci dipped in vin santo. Vegetarians eat very well: Tuscan cooking is full of bean and bread dishes that were never about meat.

Book the two that sell out
The Duomo dome climb and the Accademia are the only two things here that will genuinely defeat you if you turn up on the day — the dome because slots are fixed and finite, the Accademia because the queue is the whole morning. Book both before you fly. The Uffizi is bookable too but the after-16:00 ticket is a reliable fallback.

Monday is a bad day in Florence
The Uffizi, Accademia, Bargello, Medici Chapels and Palazzo Pitti all close on Mondays, and Boboli shuts on the first and last Monday of the month. A Monday here is a walking-and-eating day by default — Duomo complex, Ponte Vecchio, the Oltrarno workshops and Piazzale Michelangelo all still work.
