SSR International Airport (MRU) is in the island's far southeast. A taxi or pre-booked transfer is the practical choice — roughly MUR 2,300–2,500 to Port Louis (~48 km) and MUR 2,500–3,500 to Grand Baie in the north (~70 km, 60–75 min). Public buses are very cheap (~MUR 30) but slow with luggage. Many hotels include an airport transfer — check your booking. Add your hotel on the Day-by-Day tab for an exact distance and fare. Best time to visit
May–December is cooler and drier — the best time. January–March is hot, humid and the cyclone season. The west and north lagoons are calmest; the southeast is windier (great for kitesurfing). Water is warm year-round.

Getting around
The island is small but spread out — a rental car (drive on the left) or a hired driver-guide is the easiest way to combine the regions. Taxis and the Metro Express (Port Louis–Curepipe) exist; buses are cheap but slow. The <strong>Metro Express</strong> light rail links Port Louis to Curepipe and public buses are very cheap (~Rs 30–40), but a hired car is easiest for the beaches and the south; there is no day pass.

Mauritian rupees are used; cards work widely. A 10–15% service charge is often included — round up for good service. Bargain gently at markets. Resorts can be pricey; street food and table d'hôte meals are great value.

Grand Bassin
Ganga Talao (Grand Bassin) is a sacred crater lake and the most important Hindu pilgrimage site outside India — towering statues of Shiva and Durga ring it. Dress modestly and remove shoes at the temples.

Île aux Cerfs (catamaran with snorkelling and a waterfall stop) and the Blue Bay marine park glass-bottom-boat trips are the headline sea days. Book a reputable operator; conditions are best in the morning.
