Milan Malpensa (MXP) is about 50 km from the city centre. The Malpensa Express train reaches Milano Centrale (or Cadorna) in ~50 min (~€15, twice hourly). The official taxi is a fixed €110 flat rate to anywhere in the city. (If you fly into Linate instead, it's far closer and on Metro M4.) April to June and September to October are best. August is hot and much of the city closes for holidays. Fashion Weeks (February and September) and the Salone del Mobile (April) triple hotel prices — check the calendar before booking.

Getting around
Four metro lines plus trams cover everything; a single is €2.20 and a 24h pass €7.60. The historic tram 1 is a sight in itself. Milan is flat and very walkable between the Duomo, Brera and the castle.

Everything else in Milan can be done on the day. The Last Supper cannot — tickets are released in batches, sell out within minutes and are the single constraint your itinerary should be built around.

Which airport
Malpensa (MXP) is the long-haul one, 50 minutes out by the €13 Malpensa Express. Linate (LIN) is closer and now on metro M4. Bergamo (BGY) is the budget airport and is nearly an hour away by coach.

Milano Centrale puts Como (1h), Turin (1h), Verona (1h15) and Venice (2h30) within reach. Buy regional tickets at the machines and validate before boarding, or you will be fined.
