Airport → your hotel
Keflavík International (KEF) is 50 km west of Reykjavik — this is not a city airport and there is no train in Iceland at all. The Flybus and Airport Direct coaches meet every arriving flight and run to the BSÍ terminal in about 45 minutes for roughly ISK 3,999, with a hotel-drop upgrade for a little more. A taxi is ISK 16,000–20,000 and almost never worth it. Car hire is popular and sensible if you plan to drive the Golden Circle yourself. The Blue Lagoon is only 23 km from KEF against 49 km from the city, so the efficient move is to stop there on the way in or out with your bags in the luggage store. Verified Aug 2026.

Ways to spend less
Swim in a municipal geothermal pool instead of a lagoon. Laugardalslaug is about ISK 1,330 against ISK 11,990 at the Blue Lagoon, and locals will tell you it is the better experience.
The Golden Circle sites are free. Þingvellir, Geysir and Gullfoss charge no admission — only parking. Self-driving costs a fraction of a coach seat for three or more people.
Iceland is genuinely one of the most expensive countries on earth, and food is where it hurts. A restaurant main is ISK 4,000–7,000. Buy from Bónus or Krónan supermarkets, and eat the ISK 600 hot dog at Bæjarins Beztu without embarrassment.
Never buy bottled water. Icelandic tap water is among the best in the world and is free everywhere. The hot tap smells of sulphur; the cold does not.
Alcohol is sold only in state Vínbúðin shops with restricted hours, and bar prices are punishing at ISK 1,400–1,800 a beer. The airport duty-free on arrival is where Icelanders themselves buy.

Síminn, Vodafone and Nova sell prepaid SIMs; coverage is good on the ring road and patchy in the highlands. eSIMs work. Almost everyone speaks fluent English.

Best time to visit
June to August gives you near-24-hour daylight, open highland roads and every tour running — but no northern lights at all, and peak prices. September to March is aurora season, with short days (about 4 hours of light in December) and real winter driving. Late September and early March are the sweet spots: dark enough for the lights, mild enough to move around.

Getting around
There are NO trains in Iceland. Reykjavik is small and walkable; the Strætó city buses are about ISK 630 a ride. Everything outside the city means a coach tour or a hire car. If you drive in winter, take the warnings seriously — check road.is and vedur.is every morning, and never open a car door into an Icelandic wind, which tears them off and is not covered by insurance.

Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Iceland has no visa section in India — applications are handled by DENMARK through VFS Global, which is the detail that trips people up. €90, about 15 working days, plus VFS service charges. Apply to the country where you will spend the most nights.

Food to try
Skyr, lamb soup (kjötsúpa), Arctic char, rye bread baked in geothermal ground, and the hot dog at Bæjarins Beztu. The fermented shark is a dare, not a dish. Vegetarians and vegans are surprisingly well served in Reykjavik, though options thin out fast outside the capital.

Volcanic and weather disruption is normal here
The Reykjanes peninsula has had repeated eruptions since 2021, and they have periodically closed the Blue Lagoon and the Grindavík road at short notice. Weather closes roads routinely in winter. This is not a reason to avoid Iceland, but it is a reason to book flexible tours, keep a spare day, and check vedur.is and safetravel.is rather than assuming a plan holds.
