✓ Day 2

04 / 16

🇮🇹 Vittoriano & Piazza Venezia

Piazza Venezia, Rome

culture
1 hour
🕒 09:30–19:30

The vast white-marble monument to Italy's first king dominates Piazza Venezia — free to climb the front steps, with a glass "Rome from the Sky" lift (ticketed) up to the Terrazza delle Quadrighe, a 360° terrace over the historic centre beside the bronze chariot statues. The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is here.

✓ Day 2

05 / 16

🍊 Aventine Hill (Orange Garden & Keyhole)

Aventine, Rome

leisure
1 hour
🕒 07:00–21:00

A peaceful hilltop escape — the Giardino degli Aranci (Orange Garden) with its framed view over the city, and the famous Knights of Malta keyhole that perfectly frames St Peter's dome down a hedged avenue. Free and magical at sunset.

06 / 16

🎨 Vatican Museums & Sistine Chapel

Vatican City

culture
3.5 hours
🕒 09:00–18:00

08 / 16

🏛 Pantheon

Centro Storico, Rome

culture
1 hour
🕒 09:00–19:00

The best-preserved building of ancient Rome — a 2,000-year-old temple with the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome and its open oculus to the sky. Raphael's tomb lies inside. A short, jaw-dropping visit.

09 / 16

⛲ Trevi Fountain

Centro Storico, Rome

leisure
0.5 hours

Rome's most theatrical baroque fountain, Neptune surging from the rock — toss a coin over your shoulder to ensure your return. Magical and far less crowded late at night when it's beautifully lit.

🏛 Capitoline Museums & Piazza del Campidoglio

Capitoline Hill, Rome

culture
2 hours
🕒 09:30–19:30

11 / 16

🏰 Castel Sant'Angelo

Rome

culture
1.5 hours
🕒 09:00–19:30

13 / 16

⛲ Piazza del Popolo & Pincio Terrace

Central Rome

leisure
1 hour

A grand neoclassical square with an Egyptian obelisk and twin domed churches, crowned by the Pincio Terrace — one of Rome's finest free viewpoints over the rooftops to St Peter's, glorious at sunset. Steps lead straight up into the Villa Borghese gardens.

14 / 16

🏟 Baths of Caracalla

Aventine, Rome

culture
1.5 hours
🕒 09:00–19:15

The towering brick ruins of one of antiquity's grandest bath complexes — soaring walls, surviving mosaics and a real sense of imperial scale, often blissfully uncrowded. Outstanding value, and a summer-opera venue.

15 / 16

Via Appia Antica, Rome

culture
2 hours
🕒 09:00–17:00

An atmospheric guided descent into the early-Christian burial tunnels (San Callisto or San Sebastiano) beneath the ancient Appian Way — miles of carved galleries and frescoed crypts. Pair it with a walk or bike along the cobbled Roman road. Closed Wednesdays.

All 12 tips — visa, airport transfer & ways to spend less.
🛬
Airport → your hotel
Rome Fiumicino (FCO) is about 30 km from the city centre. The Leonardo Express runs non-stop to Roma Termini in 32 min (~€14). A taxi to the historic centre (within the Aurelian Walls) is a fixed €55 for up to 4 passengers. Add your hotel on the Day-by-Day tab for an exact distance and fare. Verified Jul 2026.
💰
Ways to spend less
 • Roma Pass — €38 for 48 hours (one free attraction) or €62.90 for 72 hours (two free attractions), both including unlimited public transport. Reduced entry to everything after the free ones, up to about 35% off.
 • Use the free entries on the dearest sights — the Colosseum/Forum/Palatine combined ticket first.
🆘
Emergencies
112 — single EU emergency line (English-speaking) for police, ambulance and fire. Free, 24/7.
📱
SIM & data
Carriers: TIM, Vodafone, WindTre. Prepaid SIMs widely available; or an eSIM. EU plans usually include Italy.
🌤
Best time to visit
April–June and September–October have warm, pleasant weather and lighter crowds. July–August is hot and packed (and many trattorias close in August). Winter is mild, quiet and atmospheric.
🚇
Getting around
The historic centre is best on foot — it's compact but cobbled, so wear good shoes. The two metro lines and buses fill the gaps (tap or buy tickets, validate them). Beware pickpockets on crowded buses and at big sights. ATAC tickets cover metro/bus/tram — a Roma 24h pass is ~€7, 48h ~€12.50, 72h ~€18 (unlimited) — while the Roma Pass (48h ~€36) adds transit plus free/discounted museums; hop-on buses run ~€25–30 (1-day).
🚌
Hop-on-hop-off buses
Big Bus Rome and City Sightseeing run open-top loops past the Colosseum, the Vatican, Piazza Venezia and the area near the Trevi Fountain (~€30, 1-day) — handy for the bigger distances, while the centro storico is best on foot.
💶
Tipping & coperto
Service is usually included; a "coperto" (cover charge) is normal and tipping is modest — round up or leave a euro or two. Tap water is safe and the city's free nasoni fountains are everywhere.
🛂
Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa (apply through Italy/VFS) with biometrics. Fee ~€90; processing about 15 working days. Apply several weeks ahead with insurance and bookings.
🎟
Book timed tickets
The Colosseum, Vatican Museums and Borghese Gallery all need timed entry that sells out — book online ahead. The Vatican is closed Sundays (except the free last Sunday); Borghese is closed Mondays and requires a reservation.
🍝
Food to try
The four Roman pastas — carbonara, cacio e pepe, amatriciana and gricia — plus supplì, pizza al taglio, saltimbocca and a gelato. Eat where the menu is short and in Italian.
🏛
Dress for churches
St Peter's and most churches require covered shoulders and knees — carry a scarf. Security at the Vatican and Colosseum is airport-style, so travel light.
