🕒 Open all day · Free. Unashamedly touristy and the sea lions are still worth it — numbers peak in winter, around 900. Skip the chain restaurants; the sourdough bread bowl of clam chowder is the one local cliché that earns its place. Musée Mécanique nearby is a free arcade of antique penny machines and is much better than it sounds.

Take a jacket: it is ten degrees colder and far windier on the island.

Airport → your hotel
San Francisco International (SFO) is 21 km south. BART has a station inside the airport (take the free AirTrain from domestic terminals) and reaches Powell Street and Embarcadero in about 30 minutes for around $10 — far and away the best option, and it runs until midnight. A taxi or rideshare downtown is $60–80 plus tip and can take just as long in traffic. Note that Oakland (OAK) and San Jose (SJC) also serve the Bay Area; OAK connects by BART too, SJC does not usefully. Verified Aug 2026.

Ways to spend less
Almost the best things here are free — the Golden Gate Bridge on foot, the sea lions, Chinatown, Alamo Square, Twin Peaks, Golden Gate Park itself and Lands End. Budget for Alcatraz and one museum, not for ten tickets.
Book Alcatraz 60–75 days out. It is the one thing that will genuinely defeat you otherwise, and third-party resellers charge a large premium for the same ticket.
A 1-day Muni Visitor Passport beats $9-a-ride cable cars the moment you ride twice; it also covers buses, the F-line streetcar and Muni Metro.
The Japanese Tea Garden is free before 10:00 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
Tipping is not optional in the US — 18–20% in restaurants, and many San Francisco menus now also add a health-mandate surcharge on top. Read the bottom of the bill before adding more.

911 for everything. Tap water is excellent — it comes from Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite. Pharmacies are Walgreens and CVS; note that US medical care is extremely expensive, so travel insurance is not optional.

T-Mobile and AT&T prepaid SIMs work well; eSIMs are easiest and Mint or Google Fi are cheap. Coverage is good in the city and patchy in Marin. Free wifi in most cafés.

Best time to visit
September and October are the warmest, clearest months — the local secret is that autumn, not summer, is San Francisco's real summer. June to August is famously foggy and can sit at 14°C while inland California is at 35°C. Mark Twain probably never said the thing about the coldest winter, but he should have. It rains from December to March. Layers, always — the temperature swings 10 degrees between neighbourhoods on the same afternoon.

Getting around
Muni runs buses, the metro, the historic F-line streetcars and the cable cars; BART handles the airport and the East Bay. $2.75 a Muni ride, $9 for a cable car, and a day Visitor Passport if you are riding a lot. The city is walkable in principle and brutally hilly in practice — check the contour before committing to a route. Rideshare is plentiful.

Indian passport holders need a B1/B2 visitor visa — there is no visa on arrival and no ESTA for Indian passports. US$185 MRV fee, DS-160 online, then an in-person consular interview. Appointment waits from India have run to several months, so start well before booking flights. Usually issued for 10 years, multiple entry.

Food to try
A Mission burrito, cioppino, sourdough, Dungeness crab (November to June), and dim sum in Chinatown or the Richmond. This is one of the best eating cities in the US at every price level. Vegetarians and vegans are exceptionally well served — often better than omnivores.

The fog is a scheduling problem
Summer fog rolls in through the Golden Gate most afternoons and can hide the bridge entirely. It usually burns off between 11:00 and 14:00 and returns by evening, so plan the bridge, Twin Peaks and Alcatraz photographs for that midday window. The eastern half of the city is far sunnier than the western half on the same day.

Two practical safety notes
Car break-ins are the city's real crime problem — never leave anything visible in a parked car, including an empty bag. And parts of the Tenderloin and mid-Market have visible street homelessness and drug use that many visitors find confronting; it is more distressing than dangerous, but it is worth knowing before you walk through with luggage.
