Airport → your hotel
Santorini (Thira) Airport (JTR) is tiny and only 6 km from Fira. The KTEL bus to Fira is about €2.50 but runs only every 60-90 minutes and stops in the evening. A taxi is €20-25 to Fira, €30-40 to Oia — and there are only about 40 taxis on the whole island, so they vanish when two flights land together. Almost every hotel offers a paid transfer; on Santorini it is genuinely worth pre-booking one. If you arrive by ferry instead, the port is Athinios, a switchback road 10 km south of Fira. Ways to spend less
The best things here are free: the Fira–Oia caldera walk, the sunset itself, Pyrgos, the black sand beaches. The money goes on where you sleep, not what you do.
A caldera-view room costs roughly double a non-view room in the same category. One night with the view and the rest in Fira or Kamari is a common and much cheaper split.
KTEL buses cost €2-3 to anywhere on the island and run from Fira's central station. An ATV or car is €35-60 a day; a taxi across the island is €30+ and there are almost none.
Watch the sunset from Imerovigli, Pyrgos or a winery terrace instead of Oia castle — same sun, no crush, and you can sit down.
Eat one street back from the caldera edge. The view carries a surcharge of roughly 40% on the identical plate.

Best time to visit
May, early June, September and October are the sweet spot — warm sea, everything open, and the crowds manageable. July and August are 32°C+, packed and at peak prices. From November to March much of the island genuinely closes: hotels shut, ferries thin out and Oia is a ghost town.

Getting around
Every KTEL bus route radiates from Fira's central station and costs €2-3, but they are infrequent and jammed at sunset. There are only about 40 taxis on the island and no ride-hailing app — you cannot rely on getting one. An ATV or small car (€35-60 a day) is what most visitors end up doing; you need a licence and the roads are narrow with sheer drops.

Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa. Greece's applications go through VFS Global with biometrics; fee ~€90, processing about 15 working days — but Greek summer appointment slots are booked out months in advance. Start this the moment you have dates. There is no direct flight from India: you will connect through Athens, or through a Gulf hub.

Fava (yellow split pea purée, a protected local product), tomatokeftedes, white aubergine, fresh octopus, and Vinsanto to finish. Vegetarians do very well on a Greek menu — the meze table is largely vegetable — but check that the fava and the gigantes are not finished with stock.

The Oia sunset is a logistics problem
In summer several thousand people converge on one village at the same hour. The castle ruins fill 90 minutes ahead; the buses back afterwards leave people standing for an hour; and the road out gridlocks. Either commit to it early with a plan for getting back, or watch from Imerovigli, Pyrgos or a winery and enjoy it far more.
