Europe's highest railway station at 3,454 m. The Sphinx Observatory terrace looks straight down the Aletsch Glacier, the longest in the Alps; inside are the Ice Palace, the Alpine Sensation walkway and a snow field you can walk out onto in July. Done as a loop from Lucerne it is a full day and the finest one in Switzerland. ⏱ Book months ahead — the trains sell out in summer. A seat reservation (CHF 10) is compulsory 1 May–31 Oct. Check the summit webcam the day before: in cloud you see nothing and the ticket is non-refundable.

A sheer-walled glacial trench with 72 waterfalls, the 297 m Staubbach among them — the one that stopped Goethe and Byron in their tracks. The village is the gateway to Mürren and Wengen. Inside the mountain, the Trümmelbach Falls send ten glacier-fed cascades down a floodlit gorge (CHF 14, open Apr–Nov). ⏱ Staubbach Falls is free and always open — the viewpoint is a 15-minute walk from the station. Trümmelbach Falls (CHF 14, Apr–Nov) is a bus ride further up the valley and worth the detour if you have the time.

Airport → your hotel
Zürich Airport (ZRH) has its own SBB station directly beneath the terminals. Direct trains reach Luzern in about 1 hr 05 min (~CHF 30, twice hourly) and Zürich HB in 10–13 min (~CHF 7). If Switzerland is your whole trip, start your Swiss Travel Pass on arrival day and the ride is already paid for. A taxi is metered at roughly CHF 6 base + CHF 3.80/km with a ~CHF 9.50 airport surcharge — about CHF 50–70 into Zürich and CHF 200+ to Lucerne, so the train is the obvious choice. Verified Jul 2026.
