Tashkent International Airport (TAS) is about 12 km from the city centre. Order a Yandex Go for an upfront fare of roughly UZS 30,000–60,000 (~$3–5) — far better than haggling with the taxi drivers at the exit. Link a card in the app for cashless payment. Ucell, Beeline and Uzmobile sell cheap SIMs — passport required to register. Data is inexpensive but slower than Kazakhstan. Hotel wifi is generally fine.

Best time to visit
April to early June and September to October are perfect. July and August regularly pass 40°C and sightseeing becomes unpleasant by 11:00. Winter is cold, clear and very cheap.

Getting around
The metro is cheap, clean, air-conditioned and beautiful — use it. Yandex Go covers taxis at low fixed prices. For Samarkand and Bukhara, book the Afrosiyob high-speed train well ahead on the railway site or through your hotel.

Money
The som runs to large numbers — expect thick wads of notes. Cards are increasingly accepted in Tashkent but bring cash for bazaars and outside the capital. Change money at banks, never on the street.

Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need an Uzbekistan e-Visa — it is NOT visa-free. Apply online at e-visa.gov.uz, USD 20 single entry, valid 90 days from issue with a 30-day maximum stay. Processing can take 5-10 working days, so apply at least two to three weeks before you fly.

Food to try
Plov (each region makes it differently and argues about it), lagman, manti, samsa, shashlik and non bread. Vegetarians should be direct — meat stock is assumed unless you say otherwise.

Book Samarkand early
The Afrosiyob high-speed train is the whole reason a Samarkand day trip works, and it sells out days or weeks ahead. Book before you fly. The slower Sharq train is a fallback but adds two hours each way.

Language
Uzbek and Russian; English is limited outside hotels. Younger people often speak some English. Offline Russian translation is very useful, and Uzbeks are exceptionally patient with visitors.
