🛬
Airport → your hotel
Vancouver International (YVR) is about 12 km from the city centre. The Canada Line SkyTrain runs straight from the terminal to downtown Waterfront in 26 min (~C$10.50 including the airport AddFare) — usually the best option. A taxi is a flat C$36–46 by zone; Uber/Lyft are similar. Add your hotel on the Day-by-Day tab for an exact distance and fare. Verified Jul 2026.
🆘
Emergencies
911 — police, ambulance and fire. Free, 24/7.
📱
SIM & data
Carriers: Rogers, Bell, Telus. Prepaid SIMs available; an eSIM (Airalo/Holafly) is easiest.
🌧
Best time to visit
July–September is warm, dry and glorious. Spring and fall are mild but wet; winter is rainy in the city and snowy on the mountains (great for skiing). Pack a waterproof layer any time.
🚇
Getting around
The SkyTrain, SeaBus and buses (tap a contactless card or Compass) cover the region; downtown and the seawall are very walkable and bike-friendly. A car helps for the North Shore and Whistler. TransLink SkyTrain, buses and the SeaBus use a Compass card or contactless; an all-zone DayPass is ~C$11.55 (unlimited), with cheaper one-zone fares evenings and weekends.
🚌
Hop-on-hop-off buses
The Vancouver Hop-On Hop-Off bus (Westcoast Sightseeing) loops Stanley Park, Granville Island, Gastown and English Bay (~C$60, 1-day) — a convenient way to link the city's scattered highlights and the big park.
💵
Tipping & tax
Tip 15–20% at restaurants. Taxes (5% GST + 7% PST, plus extra on hotels/alcohol) are added at the register, not on shelf prices.
🛂
Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a Canadian Temporary Resident (Visitor) Visa via IRCC with biometrics — an eTA does not apply. Processing times vary, so apply well ahead.
🚠
North Shore & Whistler
Capilano, Grouse Mountain and Lynn Canyon are a short trip across the bridges. Whistler is ~2 hrs along the spectacular Sea-to-Sky Highway — go by tour or rental car and make a full day of it.
🍣
Food to try
Wild Pacific salmon, a Japadog, fresh sushi, dim sum in Richmond and a Granville Island market lunch showcase Vancouver's seafood-and-Asian fusion scene.
🚲
Bike the seawall
The 28 km seawall around Stanley Park and False Creek is one of the world's great urban bike rides — rent near Denman Street and loop the park in a couple of hours.
