Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is about 12 km from the city centre. Venice's historic centre is car-free, so you arrive by water. The Alilaguna water bus runs to San Marco and the islands (~€18, 60–90 min); the ATVO/ACTV bus reaches Piazzale Roma in 20–25 min (€10–12) where you switch to a vaporetto; a shared water taxi is ~€39 and a private one €120+. Best time to visit
April to June and September to October are ideal. July and August are hot, crowded and smell of canal. November to January brings acqua alta flooding — atmospheric, but pack waterproof boots. Carnival (February) is spectacular and mobbed.

Getting around
There are no cars. You walk, or you take the ACTV vaporetto. A single ride is €9.50, so buy a pass — 24h ~€25, 48h ~€35, 72h ~€45. Download an offline map: signage is poor and GPS struggles between tall buildings.

Venice access fee
On peak days Venice charges day-trippers an access fee (€5-10) for the historic centre. Overnight hotel guests are exempt but must still register — your hotel handles it and issues the exemption code.

Visa for Indians
Indian passport holders need a Schengen short-stay visa (apply through Italy/VFS) with biometrics. Fee ~€90; processing about 15 working days. Apply several weeks ahead with insurance and confirmed bookings.

Food to try
Cicheti (Venetian tapas), sarde in saor, risotto al nero di seppia, bigoli in salsa and fritto misto. Avoid restaurants with photo menus on St Mark's — walk five minutes inland and the price halves.

Sitting down costs money
Coperto (cover charge) and table service are normal and legal. A coffee standing at the bar is ~€1.50; the same coffee seated in Piazza San Marco can be €10 plus an orchestra surcharge.

Luggage and bridges
There are over 400 bridges, almost all with steps, and no taxis. Pack light or pay a porter. From the airport, the Alilaguna water bus (~€15) is far cheaper than a water taxi (~€120).
